Transportation Planner I/II

Civiltech Engineering, Inc. is a civil and transportation engineering and planning consultant partnering with public and private sector clients in the Chicagoland area since 1988. Our primary focus is developing transportation design solutions for our clients. Our projects involve pedestrian and bike studies, roadway safety studies, ADA transition plans, transit plans, and freight studies, with a strong emphasis on community engagement.

We are seeking a qualified and client focused candidate to join our growing team of urban planners at our downtown Milwaukee office. This candidate would be a part of the transportation planning team and provide visual design support to other departments.

The Position

Gain experience with community engagement and continue to acquire skills in: coordinating with municipal clients; conducting site visits; preparing PowerPoints and exhibit boards; listening to, recording, and summarizing community feedback; presenting at open houses and community workshops; organizing focus groups and listening sessions.

  • Use community engagement online platforms to build project websites and interactive maps.
  • Design art and layout for client-facing presentations and events.Format reports and plans using the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Assist in preparing text and visuals for project proposals. Develop technical, policy, and grant writing skills.
  • Continue gaining quantitative and data analytic skills, including the ability to perform basic statistics on large datasets with Excel and database software.
  • Further learn how plan-making, program design, as well as problem formulation and solving can be applied to planning, urban design and traffic projects.
  • Understand the interplay of land use and demographics in transportation planning.
  • Continue learning and applying best practices in complete streets design, including NACTO, FHWA, AASHTO, MUTCD, etc. standards.
  • Understand and uphold the values and ethics of being a consultant planner in municipalities or counties.
  • Strive to understand and work within project schedules.
  • Prepare plans, maps, and data analysis reports under the direction of Project Manager or more experienced planner.

This role requires strong coordination skills to effectively collaborate with team members across multiple locations, including the Chicago and Itasca, IL offices, as well as the growing engineering team in the Milwaukee office. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to manage their own time, take initiative, and thrive in a virtual work environment to ensure seamless communication and project alignment across teams.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Urban and Regional Planning or Urban Planning and Policy (Required)
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of experience in transportation planning (Preferred)
  • Strong understanding of the Adobe Creative Cloud – Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop. Knowledge of Adobe After Effects is a plus.
  • Experience working in GIS Software, including ArcMap.
  • A desire to improve public spaces and transportation corridors in urban and suburban settings through the planning and implementation of innovative designs that balance the needs of all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, freight, and cars.
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for leading and conducting community engagement in planning and engineering studies, including: setting up and tracking project websites and online engagement maps, preparing presentations and exhibit boards, summarizing community feedback, presenting at open houses and community workshops, and organizing and leading focus groups and listening sessions.
  • Comfortable analyzing large datasets and performing statistical analyses using Microsoft Excel. Enthusiastic about and confident in learning and using technical tools to analyze data, develop recommendations, and troubleshoot.
  • The ability to think critically and communicate effectively through written, verbal and graphic communications, including experience writing plans, technical memos and white papers.
  • Exceptional research capabilities.
  • Experience in transit, environmental and/or freight planning is a plus.
  • The ability to work independently as well as closely with other design professionals, including planners, landscape architects, engineers and surveyors to develop design solutions at a fast pace.
  • Experience with or a desire to learn Bentley MicroStation is a plus.
  • Understands and upholds the values and ethics of being a consultant planner in municipalities.
  • AICP certification or the desire to pursue certification.
