On October 12, the majestic City of Chicago became the stage for a world-class event, the iconic Chicago Marathon. Over 50,000 people took to the City’s streets for the 2025 race. Civiltech is proud to not only help plan, build, maintain, and improve the race venue, the streets of Chicago, but is also proud of staff who participated.

Running

Civiltech’s Jen Hyman, P.E., finished her first Chicago Marathon! To prepare, Jen participated in incremental races that are part of the Chicago Distance Series. Jen shared, that in running in and training for the race, she crossed paths with many Civiltech project sites.

The Marathon and the Shamrock Shuffle took her past Civiltech’s City of Chicago office. Other City races took her past our North Lawndale project, our North DuSable Lake Shore Drive project, and the Jackson Park Improvements for the Obama Presidential Center. Her personal training took her by our 248th Avenue projects and the 119th Street Roadway Reconstruction, both in Naperville.

Marshalling

Civiltech’s Phil Hutchinson, PLA, LEED AP, participated as part of the bike marshal team. This is Phil’s 3rd year volunteering for this critical role. As a bike marshal, his day began at 4:30 am with a team meeting and plan review at Fullerton and the lakefront trail.

Phil was assigned to lead the wheelchair and handcycle racers who started just ahead of the pro runner’s field. With an average speed of 20 mph, these racers took Phil on a sprint across the 26.2-mile course. With his racers completing their event quickly, Phil then enjoyed watching the pro runners cross the finish line.

Civiltech says, “congratulations” to Jen on her Marathon finish and “thank you” to Phil for this challenging and important volunteer activity.
