Mid-September can leave us pondering how summer could already be over. Adding to the perceived quick passing of the summer season is saying goodbye to our summer interns.

Civiltech enjoyed a robust internship program in 2023 with 12 summer interns! As they wrapped up their time at Civiltech, they gave Interchanges to the company. An Interchange is a presentation given by a Civiltech staff member as part of our Knowledge Management program.

Interns who worked in the Civiltech’s Chicago office went first, giving their presentations on August 1. David Phan and John DeVore shared their personal backgrounds and what drew them to Transportation Engineering. They also shared what they learned during their internship and what they found most interesting and challenging. With both presentations, the City of Chicago and its Transportation Infrastructure featured prominently, as both expressed that they enjoyed being part of the transportation network as users, observers, and engineers.

On August 3, Civiltech summer interns from our Itasca office gave their Interchange recapping their summer experience. Jimmy Hoffman, Brandon Czerak, Grant Lindsay, and Jake Rytina shared their personal backgrounds and what drew them to Transportation Engineering. They also highlighted the projects they worked on during their internship, what they learned, and what they found most interesting and challenging.

Interns from the Phase III Construction Engineering team and Civiltech’s Finance department presented on August 8. Jillian McNally, Patrick Recko, Kacper Bielarczyk, and Matthew Onischuk: all Phase III interns, together with Zach Folkening, Finance intern. Zach shared the finance processes he participated in and that he was able to work on tasks for different departments. The Phase III interns’ presentations featured many photos from the construction projects they worked on and expressed the interesting aspects and challenges of hands-on field activities.

The Interchanges were given in person in the Itasca office and shared via Microsoft Teams for staff working in Chicago, in the field, and remotely. The Civiltech Team enjoyed the comprehensive and enthusiastic presentations, as well as getting to know our interns a little bit better. We wish this outstanding class of interns the best of luck as they continue their studies!
