Rehabilitation of Aging Infrastructure
Civiltech provided Structural Design and Phase II Design Engineering to rehabilitate two large bridge structures on this major arterial which provides vital access to I-55 and I-294. The two bridges carrying Northbound La Grange Road (US12/20/45) were in need of deck replacements and substructure rehabilitations.
.
Replacement and Widening
The project included the replacement and minor widening of the bridge deck, bearing replacement, and pier and abutment repairs of both the South Bridge over the I&M Canal, CN RR and S&S Canal, and the North Bridge over the Des Plaines River, Santa Fe Drive, and BNSF RR. Curved girder analysis was required at the north end of the North Bridge due to the proposed deck widening.
Lighting, Guardrails, and Drainage
The project included lighting upgrades. Lighting was replaced on all of the bridges, including the southbound bridges, and updated to LED. Navigational lights were also upgraded. Guardrails were replaced and upgrades included drainage and erosion control.
.
Spanning Large Expanses of Railroad Track
Coordination with the railroads was a key component of this project to provide access to the structures from underneath. The north bridge spans the BNSF railroad with 26 tracks of yard and main line.
Complex Maintenance of Traffic
Maintenance of traffic was a critical component. To complete the bridge work, all traffic was shifted to the southbound bridges. Crossovers were constructed to shift traffic.
