In June 2026, Civiltech welcomed Andy Schwarz, P.E., S.E., to lead our Structural Design Services department. Our structural design team provides analysis and design services for bridges and other structures related to transportation networks. Civiltech staff are also certified by IDOT to perform the required safety inspections of highway bridges and act as the Program Manager for many local agencies’ bridge inventory.

As Director, Andy will lead the structural design team, provide QC/QA of structural work, lead structural team strategy, and coordinate with other departments on structural project components and pursuits. He is especially excited to guide the structures team and help grow the department.

With over 28 years in the industry, Andy originally chose to pursue structural engineering over other engineering disciplines as it combines his talent at mathematics and his interest in structures and construction. His career has covered every aspect of structural engineering including design of buildings, underground utility structures, temporary structures, transit facilities and structures, and the design, modeling, and analysis of bridges and ramps. In this new role, he is looking forward to focusing on transportation-related structural projects and local agency projects.

Andy shared a fun fact from his diverse career. With a previous employer, he provided structural engineering services on sets for movies including a Transformers movie filmed in Chicago. In this role, Andy provided engineering for crane set-ups, stunt support components, and underground work. Two specific examples included designing the method and supports to hang cars off the Michigan Ave bridge over the Chicago River and designing a platform for a scene on the top of the Willis (AKA Sears) Tower.
