Montgomery Road Bridge Reconstruction

Bridge Replacement on Busy Connector Road

Civiltech provided Construction Engineering services on this project that replaced Montgomery Road Bridge over Waubonsie Creek. Montgomery Road is a busy connector road, therefore it was critical to get construction completed and the road fully opened quickly. Civiltech’s thorough coordination and bridge construction expertise were key to the successful and timely completion of this fast-paced project.

A Critical Waterway Crossing

Montgomery Road is carried over Waubonsie Creek by an existing single span bridge in the City of Aurora. The two nearest intersections with Montgomery Road are Kautz Road to the north and Walcott Road to the south of the waterway crossing. The bridge is in a predominantly residential area and includes recreational amenities with nearby Hoscheit Park. US 34 (Ogden Avenue) is the nearest Principal Arterial, which is about a ¼ mile to the south. Many businesses and the Rush Copley Medical Center can be accessed by way of Ogden.

Maintaining a Wide Cross Section

The existing bridge, a single span PPC deck beam structure supported on closed abutments with spread footings for foundations, had reached the end of its life and was showing signs of deterioration. The large width of the existing bridge was planned to be rebuilt at 70 feet with the total length of 39 feet. The roadway to the north has two travel lanes with a median. The new bridge and roadway use the large width to continue that cross section along with space for two paths.

Connecting Pedestrian and Bicycle Trails

The improved bridge was enhanced to one travel lane in each direction with a median and two pedestrian / bicycle trails on either side. The bridge was replaced in nearly the same position, however the trails on either side were raised 6 inches higher than the roadway as is typical with sidewalk and trails. The project includes decorative railings and updated safety measures. The roadway was improved to carry the one lane in each direction with a median on both approach sides of the bridge.
