Improving Public Transportation for all Community Members
Civiltech led this transit study to understand the current and future needs of Mount Prospect residents and visitors. The Transportation Planning team conducted a comprehensive assessment of village-wide public transportation options to help identify how public transportation can best serve residents of Mount Prospect.
A Focus on Transit-Dependent Populations
This study was initiated from the Village’s ongoing Aging in Community initiative and focused on transit-dependent populations within the community, such as youth, older adults, those with disabilities and low-income households, who may rely on public transportation as a primary mode of transportation.
A Unique Partnership
The study was a unique Village partnership. The Village’s Human Services and Community Development Departments co-managed the study providing new perspectives to be considered. Civiltech also partnered with the Nelson Nygaard team who brought insights from their national transit experience..
Robust Community Engagement
Civiltech led a robust community engagement campaign which included holding two focus groups and a pop-up meeting, developing a public survey and promoting it through Pace bus shelter ads and Pace bus car cards, and facilitating stakeholder meetings. The survey received over 600 responses, providing distinct insights into public transportation needs and opportunities.
Potential Strategies for Mobility Solutions
Based on the findings from the public and stakeholder engagement and the existing conditions assessment, the team developed a range of mobility solutions for the Village to consider. Potential strategies included:
- Establishing a New Village-managed Transit Service (fixed-route shuttle or microtransit)
- Exploring New Transit Alternatives (taxi/rideshare subsidy program and collaboration/IGA with neighboring communities or local transportation providers like township services)
- Adjusting Current Transit Service (recommend changes to Pace bus fixed-route service)
- Improving Access to Transit (pedestrian access and bus stop infrastructure)
- Increasing Transit Awareness (mobility management program and transit awareness initiative)
Village Board Presentation
Civiltech Transportation Planners, Lissa S. and Josie W., presented the study to the Village Board on August 19, 2025. The presentation was well received by the trustees who have an understanding that something needs to be done for their residents given the community’s aging population, existing service gaps, and coordination with regional transit funding and services.
