Improving Pedestrian Safety in Busy Transit Corridors
With multiple fatal crashes over the past several years and reckless driving on the rise, two transit corridors in the City of Milwaukee were selected as prime candidates for pedestrian safety and transit accessibility improvements. Civiltech provided community engagement and design services for transit-focused pedestrian improvements along W. Burleigh Street from N. Sherman Boulevard to N. 20th Street and S. César E. Chavez Drive from W. Mitchell Street to W. Pierce Street.
Transit and Pedestrian Focused Design
Civiltech met with the community to gain an understanding of existing challenges for pedestrians and transit users along the corridors. As a result, a selection of proposed bus bulbs, curb extensions, high visibility crosswalks, bus stop relocations, and other ADA compliant improvements have been designed for the two corridors.
MCTS Coordination
Civiltech has provided coordination with Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) throughout the project. Through this collaboration, Civiltech worked to create design solutions that were efficient for MCTS operations, while providing improved pedestrian accommodations.
WisDOT Coordination and Processes
The project also included WisDOT required processes for utility coordination, CEC reporting, section 106 analysis and adherence, Design Study Report and plans, specifications, and estimates. The corridors are currently awaiting advertisement and construction is anticipated to occur in 2025.
