Improving Accessibility in Joliet
Civiltech assisted the City of Joliet in creating an ADA Transition Plan. The goal of the plan was to ensure that inclusivity and accessibility is integrated into City programs and policies and that City infrastructure meets Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. The City’s Public Right-of-Way ADA Transition Plan was adopted on October 3, 2023.
Creating a Citywide Map
To obtain data, Civiltech completed a citywide survey of the public right of way utilizing ArcGIS and studied recent resurfacing and reconstruction projects. This enabled a citywide map to be created highlighting compliant and non-compliant curb ramps and sidewalks. The map can be used as a tool for the City moving forward when programming projects.
Providing PROWAG Training
The Civiltech team provided Public Rights-of-Way Accessibility (PROWAG) training with City staff. Through this training, staff learned how to review projects for ADA compliance from design through construction and inspections.
Fleshing Out the Plan
Civiltech also worked closely with the City to develop all components of the plan. This included designating an ADA Coordinator, establishing a Grievance Procedure, outlining Design Standards and Guidelines and incorporating public feedback.
