Village of Elk Grove Village

Arlington Heights Road Improvements

Significant Traffic Delays

Arlington Heights Road is a major north-south corridor through Elk Grove Village that is under the maintenance and jurisdiction of Cook County. Many of the cross streets had no left turn lanes which caused significant traffic delays during the peak hours and also increased the chances of rear end collisions. Civiltech provided Design Engineering services on this multifaceted project:

Relieving Congestion

As part of this project, the corrugated median was removed and the through lanes were narrowed to help accommodate left turn lanes at each of the side streets. Because the concrete pavement was in poor condition, significant patching was be performed before a new four inch HMA overlay.

Repairing Existing Retaining Walls

Existing retaining walls north and south of Biesterfield Road were in poor condition with significant spalling occurring. Previous attempts to repair the walls did not provide a lasting solution. The walls were removed below grade down to the footings and reconstructed with new railings.

Improving the Pedestrian Experience

A project goal was to enhance the pedestrian experience along this corridor to provide safer and enhanced connectivity between recreational, commercial and residential areas. The existing sidewalks were replaced with wider sidewalks. A new mid-block crossing with a pedestrian refuge island was installed south of Biesterfield Road, and significant landscaping was installed throughout to beautify this major Village corridor.

Coordination with Cook County

Since Arlington Heights Road is under the maintenance and jurisdiction of the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways, close coordination with the County was required. The County agreed to fund a portion of the improvements with MFT funds, and the project was processed through the County’s Bureau of Design.
