Village of Villa Park

Tri-Trails Connector

Connecting Regional Trails

Civiltech provided Phase I Preliminary, Phase II Design, and Phase III Resident Engineering services on this project that completes a gap between three regional bike trails: the Illinois Prairie Path, the Great Western Trail, and the Salt Creek Greenway Trail. The project consisted of constructing an 8-foot wide shared-use path that replaced some existing sidewalk as well as filling other sidewalk gaps.

Shared-Use Path

The sections of shared-use path are adjacent to commercial, residential, and industrial areas within the Village. The shared-use path improves pedestrian and bicycle safety at the Villa Avenue/Wildwood Avenue crossing.

Salt Creek Floodplain

The northern connection of the Tri-Trails Connector is constructed in the Salt Creek floodplain on the north side of Rotary Park. This work required a stormwater permit to ensure the net fill during construction is zero to avoid any negative impacts to the floodplain area.

STP-L Funding

Funding for the construction of the project was secured by the Village through the Surface Transportation Program (STP-L). The design followed FHWA, IDOT-BLRS, MUTCD, and AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities.

ADA Compliance

The ADA compliant design improves curb ramps and modifies driveway crossings. The improvements were completed without the need for permanent or temporary right of way acquisition.

Phase III Services

The project was let by IDOT due to the use of Federal funds, and Civiltech’s Phase III team coordinated with IDOT requirements. The Phase III team adhered to the final elevations of the construction within the flood plain to ensure zero impacts and permit compliance.
