City of Joliet

City Square

Creating a Green Oasis for All Joliet Residents

The design of City Square built upon the 2018 Chicago Street Corridor Plan to create a “green oasis” in the city center, serve as an urban quad for students from nearby schools, and provide a place of respite for local employees and residents. City Square was converted from an existing parking lot into this vibrant gathering space.

Providing an Entertainment Venue

The Square transforms into an entertainment venue for local and regional events. Design elements include open lawn, planters with water features, a small stage, custom seating, shade structures, community identifiers, and paver flex streets.

Providing Design Services

Civiltech provided Landscape Architecture and Design Engineering services on both the Square and the Chicago Street Streetscape. Multiple design concepts were developed, in addition to specific design elements and potential themes, for feedback from the community.

Engaging Stakeholders

As part of the City Square design, Civiltech interviewed City Council members during which a Visual Preferences Survey was completed to understand City priorities. A Community Input Group was established with key stakeholders to provide input at significant points in the design process.

Including All Residents

Additional stakeholder meetings included local business owners and managers, along with a focus group on the Children’s Area– a space within the City Square Design. Multiple community open houses were held, along with a public survey, to ensure all Joliet residents had a voice in the future of this public gathering space.
